YCSO Civilian Volunteers
The Sheriff's Office civilian volunteer force varies in number depending on the season. Most of the volunteers wear uniforms that clearly identify them as Sheriff's Office volunteers. They assume responsibilities that might otherwise be assigned to peace officers, for example:
Posse badge
  • Traffic control at all major accidents and major crime scenes
  • Enforcement of handicapped parking
  • Investigate criminal littering
  • Crowd control at special events
  • Verification of taxable personal property
  • Interviewing participants for RUOK?
  • Assist with senior safe programs
  • Neighborhood Watch programs

The remainder of the volunteers report for duty at the Sheriff’s Office substations where they answer phones, speak with people who visit the substations on business, and perform administrative tasks as requested. By assuming many non-law enforcement responsibilities, the volunteers permit the Deputies to respond to urgent calls for service.
