YCSO Civilian Volunteers

Civilian volunteer logo The Civilian Volunteer Program is one aspect of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office League of Volunteers (S.O.L.V.). These volunteers perform a number of important tasks vital to the overall mission of the Sheriff’s Office. They dedicate their time, talents and energy to making a difference in our community.

The Sheriff’s Office civilian volunteer force varies in number depending on the season. Most of the volunteers wear uniforms; however, they are not certified peace officers and their uniforms clearly identify them as Sheriff’s Office volunteers. The volunteers often work closely with deputies, assuming duties and responsibilities that do not require a certified peace officer, for example:

  • Traffic control at accident scenes, crime scenes, and special events.
  • Crime scene security.
  • Enforcement of handicapped parking.
  • Security and/or crowd control at special events.
  • Security checks of homes of absent owners.
  • Verification of taxable personal property.
  • Interviewing participants for RUOK?
  • Senior welfare checks (RUOK? Program).

The remainder of the volunteers report for duty at the Sheriff’s Office substations where they answer phones, speak with people who visit the substations on business, and perform administrative tasks as requested. By assuming many non-law enforcement responsibilities, the volunteers permit the Deputies to respond to urgent calls for service.

Value of Volunteer Time
During 2024, the civilian volunteers worked 2,454.5 hours on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office and Yuma County residents. Based on the Independent Sector’s national hourly rate for 2024 ($34.79), the value of volunteer labor in 2024 was $85,392.06. Based on the Independent Sector’s 2024 hourly rate for the State of Arizona ($33.70), the value of volunteer labor in 2024 was $82,716.65.
