John M. Speese ran for the office of Sheriff of Yuma County in the November 8, 1898 election, defeating the incumbent, Sheriff Mel Greenleaf. He started his 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1899.
In addition to his duties as Sheriff of Yuma County, on May 13, 1899, the Board of Supervisors appointed Sheriff Speese as the assessor for Yuma County for the period of January 1, 1899 through December 31, 1899. Speese did not run for re-election in the November 6,1900 election.
November 4, 1902 Election
Speese ran for the office of Sheriff of Yuma County in the November 4, 1902 election against the incumbent, Sheriff Gus Livingston (D) and James H. Meadows (Socialist). Speese was defeated by Gus Livingston by 2 votes.
