Michael J. Nugent ran for the office of Sheriff of Yuma County in the November 2, 1886 election and defeated the incumbent, Sheriff Andrew Tyner. Nugent resigned from his position as the Assistant Superintendent and Turnkey at the Territorial Prison effective January 1, 1887 and started his first 2-year term as Sheriff.

Nugent ran for re-election in the November 6, 1888 election and defeated opponent Walter Millar. He started his second 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1889.

Nugent ran for re-election in the November 4, 1890 election and defeated opponent Charles Baker. He started his third 2-year term as Sheriff on January 1, 1891.

Nugent did not run for re-election to the office of Sheriff in the November 8, 1892 election. He instead ran and was elected as a Yuma County Councilman.

Nugent later served as Superintendent of the Territorial Prison from May 1, 1896 through July 31, 1897.
