The Yuma County Detention Center Medical department prioritizes delivering exceptional inmate healthcare, balancing cost-efficiency with the responsibility of managing county tax funds effectively. This department is dedicated to offering services that emphasize cost-effective solutions, swift responsiveness, and unwavering commitment to providing personalized, comprehensive, and superior healthcare to all inmates under their care.

The Detention Center medical team is a blend of county-employed and contracted healthcare professionals, bringing together a wide range of medical skills. This includes expertise in emergency room procedures, intensive care, and hospital-level care.

In April 2023, the Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) entered into a contract with AB Med for our medical director services. Dr. Erik McLaughlin, the appointed director, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. His professional history is distinguished by extensive years in emergency medicine, a discipline that requires rapid, informed decision-making and profound medical knowledge.

During 2023, the medical staff conducted 4,950 initial screenings of inmates. An initial screening generates information including medicines that an inmate needs or illnesses that may require medical attention.

In addition to the initial screenings, the medical staff:

  • Logged 10,590 inmate sick calls
  • Conducted 1,870 Tuberculosis screenings
  • Diagnosed 2,530 (48%) inmates as have some form of mental health issues
