Captain Ana Duarte joined the Sheriff’s Office as a Detention Officer on May 12, 2012. Duarte graduated from Detention Officer Basic Training Academy #72, where she was assigned as a Squad Leader. She also received the Detention Academy’s “Esprit De Corps Award” for outstanding teamwork, motivation and professional demeanor throughout the academy.
During her first two years with the Detention Bureau, Duarte rotated through various custody levels within the jail to include the Maximum Security Units and Internal Transport where she served as Team Leader. In 2015, Duarte was assigned to the Detention Bureau’s Support Section as a Classification Officer and worked her way up within the Classification Section to Team Leader. In addition, since 2015 Duarte has been assisting in the Medical Examiner’s Office part-time as a Medical Examiner Investigator. Duarte has also been a member of the Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard since 2015 and she now leads and supervises this detail.
On February 14, 2016, Duarte was promoted to the rank of Senior Detention Officer and continued to work in Classification as the Section Supervisor.
On August 31, 2017, Duarte was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and rotated back to the Detention Bureau’s Custody Section where her duties expanded as a supervisor. She supervised the Afternoon Shift for two years, and Day Shift for one year.
On May 11, 2020, Duarte was promoted to the rank of Detention Lieutenant and was assigned as the Detention Bureau’s Support Section Lieutenant overseeing Program Services to include the Medical Department, Mental Health Services, Admitting Area, Inmate Programs, Inmate Education, and Custodial Services.
Duarte successfully completed the Arizona Certified Public Manager Program in October 2021 through Arizona State University Bob Ramsey Executive Education, earning her certification as a public manager.
In July 2022, Duarte transitioned to the Facility Operations position where she oversaw the Custody Section and was responsible for the Critical Incident Response Team.
Since joining the Sheriff's Office, Duarte has received recognition for her leadership, having received the YCSO Esprit De Corps Annual Award (2015), Detention Supervisor of the Quarter Award (2016-4th Quarter), and Detention Supervisor of the Year Annual Award (2019). Lt. Duarte was also nominated for the 2017 Yuma County Employee of the Year Award; she was one out of six Yuma County employees to be nominated.
On July 8, 2024, Duarte was promoted to the rank of Interim Captain and was assigned as the Commander of Detention Center Operations. On August 17, 2025, Duarte was promoted to the rank of Captain and was permanently assigned as the Jail Commander.
Captain Duarte spends her time off with her husband Manny and two boys Manny, Jr. and Danny.
