Lieutenant Jay Carlson joined the Sheriff’s Office on July 27, 2000 as a Deputy Sheriff. He served as a Patrol Deputy until March 2002 when he was assigned to the newly formed Sheriff’s Office Methamphetamine Enforcement Team as an investigator. He served in that position until July 2004.
On July 25, 2004, Carlson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transitioned back to the Patrol Bureau as a Supervisor. He served in that position until January 2006 when he was assigned to the newly formed Yuma County Narcotics Task Force (YCNTF) as an investigator. Carlson played an integral role in the creation of the YCNTF, which was formally created in February 2006 after the dissolution of the Southwest Border Alliance. Carlson later became the YCNTF Commander and served in that position until October 2008.
In December 2008, Carlson was assigned to the Patrol Bureau as a Supervisor. He served in that position until November 2014 when he was assigned as the Supervisor of the Criminal Investigations Bureau.
In 2004, Carlson attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Hazardous Device School and in 2005 he became the Commander of the YCSO’s newly formed Explosives and Ordnance Disposal (E.O.D.) Unit. Carlson has also served as a member of the Special Response Team.
On May 22, 2016, Carlson was promoted to his current rank of Lieutenant and was assigned as the Patrol Graveyard Shift Supervisor. He also oversaw the E.O.D. Unit and the Underwater Search and Recovery Team.
On January 1, 2020, Lt. Carlson was assigned as the Commander of the Criminal Investigations Bureau and Yuma County Narcotics Task Force. In addition, Lt. Carlson oversees the YCSO Volunteer Units.
On January 1, 2023, Lt. Carlson was assigned as the West County Supervisor. He also oversees the Communications Department, Evidence Department, Intel Unit, and the Explosives and Ordnance Disposal (E.O.D.) Unit.
