Lieutenant Roberto Arriola joined the Sheriff’s Office as a Detention Officer on October 13, 1998, and graduated from Detention Officer Basic Training Academy #24 on November 20, 1998. Since joining the Sheriff’s Office, Arriola has worked various custody levels within the Detention Center to include Low, Medium, High and Maximum-Security Units; as well as the Booking area.
In 2000, Arriola served as Team Leader for the Internal Transport section. He served in that position until 2001, when he was assigned to the Detention Bureau’s Support Section as an Outer Transport Officer. Arriola worked his way up within the Outer Transport section to the position of Team Leader, where he assisted with training and developing new officers.
On October 18, 2009, Arriola was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and expanded his duties as a Detention Floor Supervisor for the Support Section, which included the Admitting, Booking, Master Control, and Outer Transport sections. He served in that position, rotating through all three shifts, until November 2024.
Arriola has served as a member of the Respond Identify Subdue Control (R.I.S.C.) entry team. He would later become the R.I.S.C. assistant team leader, and finally the team leader. He has received training in multiple fields to include Court Room Procedures, Defensive Tactics, Special Management Units, and Federal Air Marshal Service Flying Armed.
In addition to his training in various fields, Arriola attended the Arizona Western College (AWC) Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA). He successfully completed the academy and graduated from AWC LETA, Class #34 on May 18, 2012, and served as a YCSO Reserve Deputy for several years.
Since joining the Sheriff’s Office, Arriola has received recognition for his leadership, having received the YCSO Innovator of the Year Award (2010); Detention Supervisor of the Quarter Award (2018); and Detention Supervisor of the Year Annual Award (2018).
On November 17, 2024, Arriola was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned as the Detention Bureau’s Support Section Lieutenant overseeing the Admitting, Booking, Facility Maintenance, Materials Management, and Outer Transport departments/sections. Lt. Arriola also manages the Critical Incident Response Team.
