On Friday, March 7, 2014 at approximately 12:27 p.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of West County 16th Street and South Avenue B in reference to a victim notifying Somerton Police Department that he had located his stolen ATV (YPD case), which had been stolen earlier that morning. Upon arrival, the suspect, later identified as Iovany Alegre, a 26 year old, Hispanic male of Somerton, fled from the quad into an orange grove. During a brief foot pursuit, the suspect stole a Toyota Tundra that was parked at a residence with the keys in the ignition.
Cocopah Police Department attempted to stop the vehicle; however, the suspect failed to yield. Sheriff’s Office Deputies were in involved in the initial vehicle pursuit which began in the area of the 15800 block of South Avenue B, but terminated a short time later as the vehicle entered the City of Somerton. Deputies terminated their pursuit in accordance with Sheriff’s Office pursuit policy.
A short time later, the Sheriff’s Office was notified that the suspect had been involved in a vehicle collision inside the City of Yuma. The suspect was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center for treatment.
On Monday, March 10, 2014, Sheriff’s Office Investigators charged the suspect with robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and theft of means of transportation.
