Armed Robbery

Location of Incident: 3500 block of West 8th Street - Yuma, AZ

On September 27, 2013, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an armed robbery that occurred in the 3500 block of West 8th Street.  Upon deputies’ arrival, the victim stated that a male subject had broken into his residence and woke him up demanding money. When the victim was unable to provide the suspect with money, the suspect then brandished a weapon and demanded the keys to his white 1993 Toyota pickup truck.

At approximately 5:56 p.m., deputies actively patrolling located the stolen vehicle at the intersection of Avenue C and 20th Street traveling north bound. The suspect attempted to elude the deputies that were attempting to catch up to them and attempt a traffic stop.  The suspect then drove west on 18th Street and turned North on 45th Avenue. The passenger in the stolen vehicle jumped out of the moving vehicle in the area of 45th Avenue and 17th Lane.  When deputies arrived, they located him in the middle of the streets. The Yuma Fire Department responded and transported him to Yuma Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly after, witnesses in the area told deputies that the stolen vehicle had struck a properly parked vehicle in the 4400 block of 17th Place.  Deputies, with the assistance of the Yuma Police Department, established a perimeter to attempt to locate the suspect.  At approximately 6:26 p.m., deputies found the suspect in a shed located in the back yard of a residence in the 4400 of 17th Place.

During the search of the suspect and vehicle, approximately 2-ounces of methamphetamine and a handgun were located.

Suspect/Driver: Norberto Aguilar Ruelas aka: “Sleepy”, a 27 year old Hispanic male of Yuma, was arrested and booked into the Yuma County Adult Detention Center for armed robbery, aggravated assault, theft of means of transportation, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing x2, prohibited possessor and on a unrelated felony warrant for probation violation.
